The market''''s slim gain of 0.45% today brought the index to 3,451.91. Moving at a cautious pace, this behavior has been observed even in the past trading days. Today''''s advance was just a little over 15 points with major contributors like the Aboitiz companies and San Miguel Corp.

Electrifying (July 27, 2010)

Meralco (MER, up 5.03% to P188.00) jolted the main index ( 3,436.59) to a gain of 22.56 points or 0.6%. Focus was on blue chips as investors position themselves for the upcoming earnings reports. Meralco was first as it disclosed that its first half core net income grew by over 80%, a big reason for the stock''''s performance today.

Transitions aren''''''''t always smooth. Problems can occur and changes in the status quo aren''''''''t always accepted with open arms. Today, the local stock market welcomed two events that signal major changes. The first is the switch to a new trading system as part of the Philippines Stock Exchange''''''''s (PSE, unchanged at P260.00) bid to lift the standard of the local stock market. The other is President Aquino''''''''s first State of the Nation Address (SONA). Both can, and will, affect the movement of the local stock market in the coming days.

Today''''s loss could have been worse but Ayala Land (ALI, up 3.39% to P15.25) made sure that it wouldn''''t. Countering the decline of other index issues, the main index''''s second largest component was responsible for cutting what was a 16.41 point loss to only 3.81 points. The decline of 0.11% led to a close at 3,414.90. On the other end of the spectrum, Metrobank (MBT, down 3.39% to P57.00) was the worst performing index issue. ALI and MBT were the two most active stocks for the day.

Ayala Land strongly led today''''s advance along with other Property issues. The sector has been receiving positive attention lately due to the expected benefits of the REIT law. Meanwhile, energy company EDC bounced to P4.60 from its recent slump.
